When I turned my camera upside down between exposures, this leafless tree became something else entirely. The branches that should reach down into earth instead mirror upward, creating a skeletal form suspended in white winter air. There are no roots here, just this impossible meeting point where crown touches crown.
The bird nests caught in the limbs look like dark growths against the grey sky. I've always thought bare trees resemble the branching structure of lungs or veins, and this double vision makes that similarity even more pronounced. The browns and greys are muted, quiet, the kind of palette that comes with cold German winters.
What drew me to this image was its mild wrongness. It's not dramatic or loud. It simply presents something familiar made slightly strange, a tree that exists in two directions at once, belonging fully to neither sky nor ground.
