Arrière-Pays
From Nice you drive north and the city drops away fast. The Tinée valley takes over: grey rock, the river below, a road that keeps climbing. The villages sit on the slopes above you. Some of them you don't see until you're already level with them.
We spent a weekend in June. Two nights in Roubion, five villages over two days: Roubion, Buisses, Beuil, Saint-Sauveur-sur-Tinée, Marie. Each one different in altitude, character, and what the light was doing when we arrived. All photographs taken with my Leica Q2.
Roubion
A medieval village at 1300 metres on a spur above the Cians gorge. Stone packed tight, views that drop fast.
Buisses
A hamlet on the road between valleys. We took the télesiège up and walked back down through the ski slopes.
Beuil
At the meeting of the Tinée and Cians valleys. Higher and more open than the perched villages.
Saint-Sauveur-sur-Tinée
Lower in the valley, close to the river. After the ridge villages the sky feels wider here.
Marie
A small village with a long view across the valley. Quiet in a way that feels settled.
